Are peanuts nuts?

Botanically, peanuts are legumes, related to beans and peas. The pods form underground after the flowers bend down into the soil, which is why peanuts are also called groundnuts. In the kitchen they are used like nuts, and their calories and fat are in the same range as tree nuts such as almonds and cashews.

The US grows four main market types: Runner (most of it goes into peanut butter), Virginia (large kernels, often sold roasted in the shell), Spanish (small, red-skinned, used in candy and mixed nuts) and Valencia, a small share used for natural peanut butter and boiling. The USDA record on this page is for all types, dry-roasted without salt or oil.

Foods made with peanuts

  • Peanut butter. Roasted peanuts ground to a paste, often with salt, sugar or oil added. Peanut Butter
  • Peanut sauce. Ground peanuts or peanut butter with soy sauce, garlic and lime, served with satay or noodles. Soy Sauce · Garlic
  • Peanut stews. West African groundnut stew thickens a tomato and onion base with peanut paste. Tomato · Onion
  • Boiled peanuts. Raw green peanuts simmered in salted water in the shell, a Southern US snack.
  • Peanut brittle. Peanuts set in hard caramelized sugar. Sugar · Butter
  • Trail mix. Peanuts with other nuts, raisins and chocolate pieces. Almonds · Chocolate Chips

How to store peanuts

Because peanuts are mostly fat, they go rancid with time, heat and light. Keep shelled peanuts in a sealed container in a cool, dark place for short storage, or in the refrigerator or freezer for longer. Peanuts in the shell keep better than shelled ones. A bitter or paint-like smell means the oil has oxidized.

Labeling a product made with peanuts

Peanut is one of the major food allergens under US law, so any product containing it needs a "Contains: Peanuts" statement or the word peanut in the ingredient list, separate from any tree nut declaration. For the nutrition panel, weigh shelled peanuts and match the record to your process: this one is dry-roasted and unsalted, so oil-roasted or salted peanuts need the added oil and salt entered as ingredients. Build the label in the label generator and check the reference amount for nuts or for your finished snack in the RACC lookup.

Peanuts nutrition label for Canada, the EU and the UK

The same serving of peanuts, drawn by the label formats other markets require: the Canadian bilingual Nutrition Facts table, the EU nutrition declaration (per 100 g, energy in kJ and kcal, salt instead of sodium) and the UK nutrition information table with reference intakes. The generator switches between these and many more from one recipe.

Frequently asked questions about peanuts

How many calories are in a cup of peanuts?
A cup of dry-roasted peanuts (146 g) has 857 calories and 35.6 g of protein. A quarter cup is a quarter of that, a little more than the one-ounce serving above.
How many calories are in peanuts in the shell?
The shell is not eaten, so it adds no calories; what counts is the kernel weight. USDA puts a single peanut kernel at 1 g and 6 calories. If you weigh peanuts in the shell, shell them first or the weight will overstate what you eat.
Are raw, roasted or boiled peanuts different in calories?
Dry roasting removes a little water, so roasted peanuts are slightly more concentrated than raw ones, and oil roasting adds some fat. Boiled peanuts absorb water, so they have fewer calories per gram. Salted peanuts carry far more sodium than the 1.7 mg in this unsalted record.
Peanuts vs almonds: which is more nutritious?
Per ounce they are close in calories. Peanuts have a little more protein, while almonds have more fiber, vitamin E and calcium. Compare both on the almonds page.
How many peanuts are in an ounce?
At USDA's 1 g per kernel, an ounce is a little under 30 peanuts. Kernel size varies by type, so larger Virginia peanuts give fewer per ounce.
What is a serving of peanuts?
This page defaults to 1 oz (28.4 g), a USDA household measure. The serving size on a packaged food label is set by the FDA reference amount (RACC) for its category, so a product label can use a different amount. The selector above shows every USDA measure for peanuts.
Can I use peanuts in a Nutrition Facts label calculation?
Yes. Open the generator with peanuts added, enter the weight you use, add your other ingredients and the label is calculated from the same USDA record shown here. A label for a product you sell must reflect your actual recipe and finished serving.

Source and method

Nutrient values are from USDA FoodData Central, SR Legacy (April 2018 release, public domain), record 173806: "Peanuts, all types, dry-roasted, without salt". Values are stored per 100 g exactly as USDA reports them and scaled to each serving by weight. The Nutrition Facts panel applies the FDA rounding rules in 21 CFR 101.9; tables and text show the scaled amounts at reading precision, so a figure can differ slightly from the panel. A nutrient USDA does not report for this food is shown as not reported, never as a guessed value.

SR Legacy predates the added sugars field. This is a whole or unsweetened food, so added sugars are shown as 0 g. View the USDA record ↗
