Bacon nutrition by serving size

Every serving below is a USDA household measure for this food, a fraction of one, or a unit conversion. Amounts are USDA values scaled by weight; only the Nutrition Facts panel applies the coarser FDA label rounding.

What bacon is and what this record covers

American bacon is cut from the pork belly, cured with salt and sodium nitrite, and usually smoked before slicing. Packages labeled "uncured" are cured too, with a natural nitrite source such as celery powder in place of added sodium nitrite. Canadian bacon comes from the leaner loin and turkey bacon is made from turkey, so neither matches the numbers here.

USDA's record covers regular sliced pork bacon, baked. A cooked slice in the serving list weighs 8.1 g. Thick-cut slices weigh more, so weigh them or count them as more than one regular slice.

Raw vs cooked bacon: why the weight drops

Bacon loses most of its weight in the pan. USDA weighs a raw slice at several times the weight of the same slice cooked, because water evaporates and fat melts out. That is why cooked bacon has more calories per 100 g (548) than raw bacon, even though each slice ends up with fewer calories than it started with.

The method matters a little too. USDA analyzed baked, pan-fried and microwaved bacon separately, and the baked record used here keeps more fat per gram than the other two. Draining cooked slices on paper towels removes some of the surface fat.

Foods made with bacon

Labeling a product made with bacon

Weigh bacon in the state it goes into your product. For a sandwich, salad or topping made with cooked bacon, weigh the cooked slices or crumbles and use this record. For a product where raw bacon cooks inside, such as bacon-wrapped items, part of the fat renders out during cooking, so a calculation from raw weight overstates fat and calories unless you account for the loss. Bacon adds a lot of sodium for its weight, so small weighing errors show up on the label. Enter your ingredients in the label generator and check the reference amount for your product in the RACC lookup.

Bacon nutrition label for Canada, the EU and the UK

The same serving of bacon, drawn by the label formats other markets require: the Canadian bilingual Nutrition Facts table, the EU nutrition declaration (per 100 g, energy in kJ and kcal, salt instead of sodium) and the UK nutrition information table with reference intakes. The generator switches between these and many more from one recipe.

Frequently asked questions about bacon

How many calories are in one slice of bacon?
One cooked slice of regular bacon (8.1 g) has 44 calories and 2.9 g of protein. Thick-cut slices weigh more and have more calories each.
Does bacon have carbs?
Barely. Two cooked slices have 0.2 g of carbohydrate and 0 g of sugars in USDA's record. Maple, brown sugar or honey-cured bacon can add a little sugar, so check the package.
Bacon vs turkey bacon: which has fewer calories?
Per 100 g cooked, USDA's turkey bacon record has fewer calories and less fat than pork bacon, which has 548 calories and 43.3 g of fat. Its sodium is close to pork bacon's, since both are cured with salt.
Is reduced-sodium bacon much lower in sodium?
USDA's cooked reduced-sodium bacon has a little under half the sodium per 100 g of regular bacon, which has 2193 mg. Its calories and fat are about the same.
What is a serving of bacon?
This page defaults to 2 slices cooked (16.2 g), a USDA household measure. The serving size on a packaged food label is set by the FDA reference amount (RACC) for its category, so a product label can use a different amount. The selector above shows every USDA measure for bacon.
Can I use bacon in a Nutrition Facts label calculation?
Yes. Open the generator with bacon added, enter the weight you use, add your other ingredients and the label is calculated from the same USDA record shown here. A label for a product you sell must reflect your actual recipe and finished serving.

Source and method

Nutrient values are from USDA FoodData Central, SR Legacy (April 2018 release, public domain), record 167914: "Pork, cured, bacon, cooked, baked". Values are stored per 100 g exactly as USDA reports them and scaled to each serving by weight. The Nutrition Facts panel applies the FDA rounding rules in 21 CFR 101.9; tables and text show the scaled amounts at reading precision, so a figure can differ slightly from the panel. A nutrient USDA does not report for this food is shown as not reported, never as a guessed value.

SR Legacy predates the added sugars field. This is a whole or unsweetened food, so added sugars are shown as 0 g. View the USDA record ↗
