Question 1

What is the difference between branded and generic nutrition data?

Accepted Answer

A branded record is the panel a manufacturer declared for a specific product, submitted to the database. A generic record is an analysed or calculated value for the food in general. Use branded data to see what a competitor declared; use generic data when formulating, because a branded record describes their recipe rather than yours.

Question 2

Can I copy a competitor panel for a similar product?

Accepted Answer

No. Their panel reflects their formulation, their supplier specifications and their process yield. Copying it means declaring numbers you cannot support if anyone asks, and small recipe differences move values enough to matter at a rounding boundary or a claim threshold. Use it as a sanity check on your own calculation, not as a source.

Question 3

How current is this data?

Accepted Answer

Branded records reflect what was submitted at a point in time and reformulation is constant, so an entry can be behind the pack on the shelf. For anything that matters, check the current physical label rather than relying on the database record alone.

Question 4

Why can I not find a product?

Accepted Answer

Coverage is strongest for large US retail brands and thinner for regional, private-label, foodservice and non-US products. Absence from the database says nothing about the product; it usually just means nobody submitted it.
